Cameroon through the vision and coordination of the number one sports man, His Excellency Paul Biya, has embarked on a historic and ambitious 10 years project to equip the country with ultra-modern sports infrastructure worthy of international standards. If there is one activity that has exposed Cameroon to the world, makes its anthem to be sung in the gathering of nations and whose actors have contribute immensely in the economic development of the country, is sport.
Sports have been one of the cultural heritage of Cameroon, since the days of Joseph Bessala the boxer who won a silver medal in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, to Roger Mila who fascinated the world during the 1990 world cup in Italy which permitted the contribution rate of the African continent to increase from three to five. Thanks to Cameroons participation the continent of Africa gained two additional spaces. The national football team has been the most successful in Africa since its strong showing in the 1982 and 1990 FIFA world cups. Cameroon has won five African cup of nations titles and a gold medal at the 2000 Olympic. The unflinching support of the President of the Republic to sports and physical education cannot be under minded as he does not only financially support their activities but also visits them while they are executing their task. The Head of State was in Italy during the 1990 world cup which went a long way to galvanise the players causing them to defeat the world’s champion Argentina by one goal to zero.
To show his interest and commitment to the development of sporting activities in the country the President of the Republic has embarked on the construction of multiples stadium and multipurpose sporting complexes like the Yaounde sports complex, the 60000 seats stadium under construction in Olembe-Yaounde, the 20000 seats stadium already in use in Bafoussam and Limbe not living out the 30000 seat complex in Douala with an Olympic swimming pool as well as the 2000 seats sports complex in limbe and Bafoussam respectively. Also a whole ministry has been devoted for the coordination of its activities (Ministry of Sports and Physical Education).
This different construction projects can be looked upon as using a stone to kill two birds. Given that, the projects are also going to generate economic activities as the construction companies will provide jobs for the youths and small scale businesses will also develop around the construction sites.
